The Legend of the Bull of San Torcuato begins at the Masmas farmhouse, where a man lived who owned a large herd of bulls.
One day, the rancher noticed that one of his best bulls disappeared every day at the same time. After several hours of absence, the animal would return to the farmhouse on its own.
At first, the man didn't think much of it. However, when he observed that the bull repeated this behavior for several consecutive days, he began to suspect that something strange was happening.
Determined to prevent the animal from leaving, the rancher decided to tie the bull up with a chain.
But, according to the Legend of the Bull of San Torcuato, the chain mysteriously came loose without the animal making any sudden movements.
Intrigued by what was happening, the man decided to follow the bull.The discovery of the sacred place
Following the animal for a long distance, the cattle rancher arrived at a place where the bull began to paw the ground insistently.
Upon approaching, the man discovered that the animal had unearthed the remains of a human being.
Observing the clothing of the corpse, the rancher suspected that it might be someone connected to the church.
Surprised by the discovery, he decided to go to Guadix to inform the authorities of what had happened.
After examining the site and the remains found, the religious authorities concluded that the body belonged to Saint Torquatus, patron saint of the city and first bishop of the Diocese of Guadix.

Following the discovery of the site where the saint's remains were located, the place began to be considered sacred.
Over time, it was decided to build a hermitage dedicated to Saint Torcuato there, transforming the site into a place of devotion for the inhabitants of Guadix.
This tradition is linked to the sanctuary that was later erected in Face Retama, where the saint's figure is commemorated today.
