The Cathedral of Guadix and its mysteries
The Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer is set primarily in Guadix Cathedral, one of the city's most important monuments and the seat of the first diocese in Spain.
This temple holds numerous unique architectural features that fuel the mystery surrounding the legend:
- The skewed arch of the San Torcuato chapel, a unique architectural solution.
- The spiral staircases of the bell tower, designed in such a way that those going up and those going down never cross paths, even though they use the same space.
On these stairs and in the former bell ringer's quarters begins the story that gave rise to the Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer.
The old Moorish woman and injustice
According to tradition, on All Saints' Day, an elderly Moorish woman was taking shelter from the rain at the Santiago Gate of Guadix Cathedral, begging for alms from the faithful.
Few stopped to help her.
At one point, a high-ranking lady passed by accompanied by her husband, a powerful knight belonging to the Holy Office.
Annoyed by the old woman's persistence, the knight reacted violently and struck her with his staff, leaving her injured and humiliated.
Faced with this injustice, the cathedral bell ringer, named Torcuato, tried to intervene to defend the woman.
This gesture provoked the knight's anger, who ordered the old woman arrested and imprisoned in the dungeons, accusing her of witchcraft. Torcuato was also arrested and confined in the bell tower until the Holy Office decided his fate.
This episode marks the central point of the Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer.
The old woman's curse
Before being taken to prison, the old Moorish woman uttered a terrible curse against the knight.
According to the Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer, her words foretold that, on the third day, a prince would pass through his body and two dark angels would lead him to his eternal destiny.
Although the knight tried to ignore the prophecy, fear began to grip him.
During the following days, he sought spiritual refuge by praying in the chapel of Saint Torcuato, hoping to avert the fulfillment of the curse.
The fulfillment of the prophecy
At dusk on the third day, while the knight was praying in the cathedral, a man dressed in black silently appeared from a hidden door near the sacristy.
In a matter of seconds, the stranger attacked him with a dagger.
Before fleeing, the assailant uttered words that revealed the motive for the attack:
He had carried out an order from Prince Aben-Humeya, leader of the rebellious Moriscos.
Gravely wounded, the knight managed to reach the Santiago Gate, where he fell to the ground as he gazed at the figures on the lintel, which seemed to represent the symbols foretold by the curse.
Thus, according to the Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer, the old woman's prophecy was fulfilled exactly.
The bell ringer's secret
After the knight's death, the authorities confirmed that the bell ringer, Torcuato, had remained under surveillance in the tower throughout the entire incident.
Therefore, he was declared innocent.
However, the Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer adds an unexpected final twist.
In the bell tower's chambers, Torcuato carefully cleaned the blood from a dagger that his cousin, Aben-Humeya, had given him.
The secret to his escape lay in the peculiar architecture of the cathedral's staircases: while one ascended from the street, another descended through the same opening into the interior of the temple, allowing him to evade surveillance.
According to tradition, the dagger used in the crime is currently kept in the Guadix Town Hall, while other items related to the story remain in the cathedral for those who know where to look.
Thus ends the Legend of the Cathedral Bell Ringer, one of the darkest and most fascinating stories in Guadix's legendary heritage.
